History
Compass Clinical Consulting has roots that reach back to 1979 with Kate Fenner, RN, PhD, directing client engagements and Peter Fenner, PhD, directing internal operations. When the firm moved to Cincinnati OH, it changed its name to Compass Group, Inc., and most recently rebranded itself as Compass Clinical Consulting to better reflect the team’s mission.
During the ensuing 30 years since its founding in Illinois, Compass has grown in scope, but kept a focus on improving hospital clinical operations. The firm was well-positioned and staffed to assist healthcare organizations towards more effective delivery systems – reducing the cost of delivering safe, quality healthcare, streamlining systems and improving quality processes. This led to assignments with some of the nation’s leading academic and non-profit hospitals, across the country.
Recent strengthening of senior management included the addition of Cary Gutbezahl, MD, joining in 2007, who now serves as President and COO. Kate Fenner continues as CEO and Peter Fenner as CFO.
Experienced leaders head today’s Compass Clinical Consulting services into four service now streamlined to focus on:
- Operational Improvement, including labor productivity, case management, cardiology management, ED management, OR management, nursing department management and comparative analytics and performance benchmarks that lead to hospital operational improvement
- Strategic Improvement, including executive leadership, organizational development, board development, physician engagement, conflict management, and fund development
- Interim Management for placing senior executive and department managers into interim assignments until hospital leaders are able to hire full-time personnel
- Accreditation and Compliance, to prepare hospital managers for continuous compliance to The Joint Commission and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services regulations, and to assist those hospitals that are decertified to regain certification
