OR Assessment and Interim Leadership

OR Assessment and Interim Leadership

Setting the Scene

An urban hospital in the Northeast was experiencing operational issues in the area of Perioperative Services. Compass Clinical Consulting was retained to conduct an assessment of this department and identify areas of improvement.

Crafting a Solution

The initial assessment revealed the need to improve block utilization as a means to managing labor costs. In addition, there were several potential compliance issues that needed greater attention. An interim OR Director was deployed and charged with implementing a corrective action plan to boost operational performance and efficiency.

To begin focusing the staff on performance, a Perioperative Dashboard was developed. Simultaneously, the interim OR Director engaged the staff in training to assure full compliance with standards of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission (TJC).

Seeing the Results

Identifying focal points for self-assessment through the Perioperative Dashboard allowed the OR staff to work collectively towards improvement. As a result, the organization witnessed a 27% increase in block utilization, which led to a 19% reduction in overtime. Due to efforts to achieve regulatory compliance, the hospital experienced successful Department of Health and TJC surveys with no Requirements for Improvement or areas of non-compliance within the department of Perioperative Services.
