Nurses deliver the vast majority of direct care rendered in hospitals: They physically and psychologically touch the most patients, and they engage in almost every aspect of care delivery. And it is from here that vulnerabilities most often spring, as nurses perform the significant majority of the “doing” in care delivery, and it is in the “doing” that lapses in compliance occur. For these reasons, when the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issue a negative compliance finding, much of the blow is felt by the nursing department.
