Compass Clinical Consulting helps hospitals and health systems, and other healthcare organizations improve performance and overcome obstacles to providing safe, quality patient care.

We are clinically focused, driving change toward a goal of creating better American health systems through three services lines: clinical and operations performance improvement, accreditation and regulatory compliance, and interim healthcare leadership.

Founded in 1979 by Kate and Peter Fenner, Compass is known in the healthcare field for achieving long-term results and providing a significant return on investment. In 2018, Compass was acquired by TiER1 Performance Solutions, a strategy activation firm that improves organizations through the performance of people.

With his background in performance improvement methods and expertise in program implementation, Mark Reifsteck knows how to achieve strategic and operational results. As President and Managing Director of Compass Clinical Consulting, Mark draws on his experience as a leader of a professional services advisory firm and four healthcare systems to provide exceptional service to Compass clients.

An experienced healthcare executive with more than 30 years of consistent achievements in complex, values-based organizations, Mark has a track record of excellent working relations with senior administration, physicians, and other departmental leaders to realize ambitious operational and clinical quality improvements. While at Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Mark along with the CEO, CFO, and other senior executives, engineered a $55M turnaround using work plan methodology. Mark is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Lisa Prytula, MA, RN-BC

Associate Managing Director

As Associate Manager Director of Compass Clinical Consulting, Lisa uses her expert knowledge in the accreditation standards and CMS Conditions of Participation, hospital leadership experience, project management skills, and customer service focus to provide clinical and operational leadership and support to clients across all of Compass’s service lines.

Prior to joining Compass, Lisa was the Director of Clinical Standards Interpretation in the Division of Healthcare Improvement at The Joint Commission. Through a career dedicated to professional development and education, evidence-based practice and research, and nursing leadership, Lisa embodies a commitment to helping healthcare organizations improve quality and patient safety—the mission Compass pursues in collaboration with our clients every day.

Victoria Fennel PhD, RN-BC, CPHQ

Victoria Fennel PhD, RN-BC, CPHQ

Director, Accreditation and Clinical Compliance

As Director of Accreditation and Clinical Compliance at Compass Clinical Consulting, Victoria manages accreditation and compliance engagements and directs client education and advisement. During her career, Victoria has focused on areas such as evidence-based practice, nursing education, accreditation, risk management, and patient safety. With her clinical expertise and adept communication skills, she can collaborate and enact change at all levels of a hospital.

Victoria has led Compass’ efforts to help healthcare organizations prepare for scrutiny from CMS and TJC. Victoria coaches and mentors hospital and health system staff and managers on survey activities through retainer services, assists with development of plans of correction, and has a 100% success rate in helping hospitals maintain CMS certification. She frequently contributes her knowledge and expertise to healthcare journals, including Compass’ online Hospital Accreditation and Compliance Journal and Becker’s Hospital Review. She is a Registered Nurse, a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality, a Six Sigma Green Belt, and is board-certified in Nursing Professional Development.

Kate Fenner, RN, PhD

Senior Advisor

Kate Fenner understands leadership. First as a nurse, and later as an education leader and consultant, Kate has immersed herself in the regulatory and operational issues that face today’s healthcare organizations. As Senior Advisor of Compass, Kate uses her problem-solving and communication skills to help clients meet their clinical and cultural goals, focusing on organizational optimization, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance.

A regular keynote speaker throughout the country, she authored a leading college text on law and ethics in healthcare, and co-authored other texts on a variety of healthcare issues. She has been involved in numerous regional and national board activities, most recently as a member of the Advisory Board for the Graduate Program in Health Services at Xavier University and a member of the editorial board of the Journal for Nursing in the 21st Century.
